Root Canal Revision

A retreatment procedure that corrects a previously performed root canal that has failed or become reinfected.

A retreatment procedure in which a previously completed root canal is reopened, the canals are re-cleaned and reshaped, and the tooth is resealed to address a failed or reinfected root canal treatment.

The existing crown or filling is removed to access the canals, old filling material is carefully taken out, the canals are re-cleaned, reshaped, and disinfected, then refilled and sealed with a new restoration placed on top.

Saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost to persistent infection, eliminates recurring pain, and gives the original root canal treatment a second chance to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who might consider this treatment?

Patients whose previous root canal has failed, resulting in recurring pain, persistent infection, or a new abscess that indicates the tooth needs to be retreated to be saved.

What is the typical experience?

The tooth is numbed and the existing filling material is carefully removed before the canals are re-cleaned and resealed. Discomfort following the appointment is typically mild and short-lived.

How long does it usually take?

The procedure typically requires two appointments spaced one to two weeks apart — one to remove the old filling material and re-clean the canals, and a second to place the final restoration.

Is there anything to keep in mind?

The retreated tooth will still need a crown to protect it long term. The tooth should be monitored at follow-up visits to confirm healing is progressing as expected.

What should I know about recovery after?

Some soreness around the treated tooth is normal for a day or two. Avoid chewing on that side until the permanent crown is placed.
